The run-down, the rat run, the pointless going-nowhereness of it, the grimness of it all, the daily grind, the Mr Gradgrinds we all know, the grindstone, the millstone, the treadmill*… argh. And it’s not even raining any more, you’d think I’d be grateful. But no. So here:
I know it’s old, it’s had-it, it’s pretentious, it’s too indie, nothing’s more old-fashioned than five years ago, & it’s been parodied everywhere – but think of it as pure form. It’s an apogee. And to be honest it does cheer me up every single goddamn time. If you complain I might hit you with the Lego version someone;’s done.
Otherwise, and I might do this anyway, I might reprise Verka Serdyuchka, last year’s Eurovision’s Ukrainian tranny tinfoil vision. (I missed this year. Count yourself lucky.)
(But seriously. Tears of pure joy.)
* the letters from the bank you can’t bring yourself to open, the phone bills, Virgin Media, call centres generally, the gridlike nature of everything, the supermarket, sore eyes, never going swimming any more, the rent, one’s penniless old age quickly looming… shall I go on?

I have sent this to so many people in the past – it just makes me laugh. Ta for reminding me.

I’ve always liked more rock than indie and taken the piss out of ex-art school friends for all those bands in ‘crazy’ outfits with crap singers (the Flaming Lips just about make me give up on life) and yet….I really like this (and have never seen it before…don’t have the faintest idea who they are even…one quirky art school band looks much like another…tank-tops, sideburns, unfeasibly tight bright trousers).
Indeed I particularly enjoyed the ice-skating moves and overall the putting-those-stupid-treadmill-things-to-good-use. Grown-men (nearly typed ‘groan’…interesting) should behave like this more often. Plus gyms should be banned. And women who moan (or groan) about ‘not having been to the gym recently’. Anything else I can ban while I’m here? (rants before 8am?)
