the loneliness of the all-night…

…rat.

Yesterday’s Telegraph features one of the most eye-opening stories of the day – at least, it got my attention.

“Researchers found that the aroma of coffee helped restore brain activity in sleep-deprived rats to normal or near-normal levels,” it says.

Yes – it is true! Half of a group of rats kept awake for 24 hours – in a lab in Japan – the lucky half – were exposed to the smell of roasted coffee beans…

“When the researchers then dissected the animals to examine their brains they detected lower levels of ‘messenger molecules’ which show up genetic activity in the sleep-deprived rats.

But among those exposed to the smell of coffee, the molecules appeared to have returned to near-normal levels in most cases.”

Alarmingly, according to the Telegraph, this news “has led to suggestions that factory owners should pump the smell of coffee into the building to revive flagging workers unable to have a cup.” Which rather begs the question of a coffee break… or is it like jam every other day. And one has to hope the logical next step wouldn’t be dissection.

But I think if we extract the essence (geddit!?!! God, I slay myself sometimes) from this story it does tell us everything we need to know about our morning coffee. Grinders at the ready! You know what to do.
