A snippet in the, I think, last-but-one Times Literary Supplement, however, recounts how the then editor, Sir Bruce Richmond, fell out with Virginia Woolf over her terms of criticism. It was the word “lewd” in particular that he was unhappy with: “Of course, I don’t want you to change it,” he wrote, “but surely that is a rather strong expression to apply to anything by Henry James.”
Maybe it’s Woolf we should be wondering about, not James.

Lewd or prude, at least she looks like she’s itching to get out of that dress.
