about me

between Baroque and a hard place

At the top of the first incarnation of Baroque in Hackney, back when I had no idea what it was going to turn out like – when I had just been made redundant and was looking for something to do, and “Baroque in Hackney” seemed like a hilarious play on the state of having no money and liking nice things – I wrote:

“poet, critic, copywriter, editor, conversationalist, style consultant, personal shopper, siren, and housemaid to the gods – at least they think they’re gods.”

Admittedly, hardly anyone asks me to consult on their style any more; maybe it’s the blog: they know I’ll say it anyway. The kids, too, have probably begun to realise they’re not infant deities.

I’m still the other things, though. Maybe not a siren. Except the kind that makes noise.

professional stuff: free at last!

Having just been made redundant for the second time in two years, I am as I write this – October 2008 – going over to the freewheeling, free-&-easy, freekish freelance lifestyle. Come back in a year and I’ll tell you how it went.

The great news is that I’m now available for all your writing and communication needs – seriously. Copywriting, editing, copy-editing, publication production, communications strategy, project planning, PR, web editing - I’ll do it. In verse if you like. For quite reasonable rates. I hate punctuation mistakes and sloppy thinking.

My professional website is up, though sadly still in development from the design point of view. You can find it at http://katyevansbush.com.

other stuff

You can follow me on twitter here.

I’m on Facebook.

My debut poetry collection, Me and the Dead, is published by Salt.

I also write reviews, essays and criticism.

a joke

Man comes out of prison. Early in the morning, they release him into the street via the back door; there is no one about, except for a little boy, who stands there looking at him. The man rushes into the street, and shouts, “I’m free, I’m FREE!”

The boy looks at him. “So what,” he says. “I’m four.”

  • Hi

I love your site: very eclectic and also user-friendly for a change!

Just wondered if you would be interested in seeing a copy of my new novel Castle in the Clouds. It’s about every possible modern mental illness you can imagine and set in rehab. Oliver James has given it a thumbs up and it’s out next month.

    Kind regards

    Monica

  • Hi there, was just browsing some blogs and I came across yours.
I was at a reading by some Salt writers in Stoke Newington earlier this week and am just finding out more about all the local literary things going on. I’m based in Dalston (well, technically Islington by a street – my Mom is so pleased) and am working on a new project called CompletelyNovel.com which is going to be an online community all about books. The idea is to link up everyone in the book industry in order to encourage creativity, diversity and collaboration.
Will stop with the sales pitch now! But if you are interested in hearing more, or getting involved…just let me know.

  • Hello. Just found your blog via the Hackney connection (I live in Clapton, just down the road).

Some lovely stuff here, I’ll keep reading I think.

Feel free to check our stuff. Be careful though, there’s swearing.

  • Great blog! Glad I found it. I’ve started a blog for translators working Spanish<>English to talk about style. It’s a way to share what we know and help each other learn what we don’t.

    I hope you’ll visit.

  • Hi,
I just found you here via George Szirtes’ blog (though I think I already know you…from facebook maybe?) But seeing you are a Salt author, I thought I’d say hi since I’m part of Tania Hershman’s virtual tour surrounding her new Salt short story collection, “The White Road.” Your blog is great. I’m putting you on my list of blogs I follow. And if you’re interested, I’m at http://sueguineyblog.blogspot.com

  • Kate Mate!
How fabola to see you here in colour and your shiny star in ascendance. Promise to write a proper update soon but in the meantime do you suppose my autographed copy of the first blog (as signed on the 73!) is now worth floggin?

  • There must be something wrong with me, besides the obvious, I mean, because every single time I read that joke I laugh out loud. Every single time.

  • Unreliable, I think you for that. Really.

    Cora dear, just call me!

Sue, thanks for that, and yes, facebook – I’ll check out the tour, and no fear – you don’;t know you;re in Hackney till there’s swearing.

Anna – tell your Mom it’s Islington all you like, I’m glad yo see you here and hope you’ll join in the swearing…

  • Amazing what you can find when you “go random”. I was looking for something completely different when I started poking my muzzle in the e-vortex, but I found you instead! Groovy site. Most useful and, apparently, non-denominational. Who knows…
Anyway, be excellent & all that.

  • Thrilled to find your blog. Bloody sad to hear you’ve been made redundant twice in two years. I’d be practically suicidal, I think, so I admire your verve. Freelancing is tough at the best of times. The economic crisis makes it as risky as tightrope-walking between two skyscrapers.

  • Terrific blog! It’s great that you’ve made such good use of what could have been a disaster.

I’ve mainly wandered onto readers blogs so far, and have enjoyed several of them, though their aftertaste is usually frustration at not having enough time to read the recommended novels. Yours is likely to seriously distract me from trying to develop my own, and my other writing projects.
It’s lovely to see so much space and thought given to poetry – I’m constantly torn between that and fiction in my own writing and reading.

  • [...] but by no means least, is a new treasure – Baroque in Hackney, a site crammed with a huge variety of posts and links. I’m afraid it’s going to be a [...]
